Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 tablespoons oil (vegetable oil)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 (2 1/2 pound) beef brisket roast (or boneless beef ribs)
  • Black pepper
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 4 cups beef stock
  • 1 star anise
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 5 tablespoons sesame seeds (toasted and divided)
  • 1 stalk baby leeks (sliced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon fish sauce (or to taste)
  • Lettuce leaves (cleaned, and dried)
  • Red bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 green onions, chopped

How to Make

  • Step 1: Heat vegetable oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Season the roast generously with black ground pepper. Add in beef roast to pot and cook until browned on all the sides. Add onions and cook until translucent. Add garlic and cook 1-2 minutes.

  • Step 2: Add soy sauce and stock to cover beef, add water if beef stock is not enough.

  • Step 3: Add in the star anise and brown sugar; bring to a boil. Lower heat; simmer for about 2 hours or until beef is tender. At end of cooking, Add sesame oil, 4 tablespoons sesame seeds, leeks, and cayenne pepper; simmer for about 10-15 minutes more. Season with fish sauce.

  • Step 4: Slice beef into thin strips (slicing across the grain).

  • Step 5: TO SERVE: place beef strips in lettuce cups. Spoon sauce over and garnish with bell peppers strips, green onions, and remaining sesame seeds.
