Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 12 to 13 ounces sliced bread (12 slices day-old French or Italian bread, crusts removed)
  • 6 ounces semisweet chocolate (chopped)
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Confectioner’s (icing) sugar
  • Orange sections (optional)

How to Make

  • Step 1: In a well greased 13- by 9-inch (3 L) baking dish, arrange 6 bread slices. Sprinkle over chopped chocolate. Top with remaining slices.

  • Step 2: In a large bowl, beat eggs lightly. Whisk in orange juice, butter, sugar, evaporated milk and vanilla. Pour over bread. Let stand 30 minutes.

  • Step 3: Bake in a preheated 350ºF oven for 45 minutes, or until puffed and lightly browned. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar. Serve with orange sections.
