Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 4 (10 ounces) hoagie bread rolls (4 submarine sub rolls, also known as hoagies)
  • 8 ounces sliced American cheese (optional, 8 slices)
  • 1/2 cup olive oil (extra virgin, divided)
  • 2 cups sliced lettuce (sliced very thin into shreds)
  • 8 ounces tomatoes (2 plum tomatoes, cut into 1 - 1 1/2" pieces)
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups sliced red onion (sliced very thin)
  • 2 bell peppers (red or green bell peppers, sliced thin or diced into 1" pieces)
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms
  • 2 large dill pickles (diced)
  • 1/2 cup pepperoncini, sliced thin
  • 1/4 cup sliced Kalamata olives with pits removed (or Spanish olives, sliced in half, optional)
  • 1/4 cup sliced peppadew peppers (sliced in half, optional)
  • 1 cup crumbled feta cheese (imported is preferred as it is much more superior to domestic)
  • Hot pepper submarine hoagie spread (1/4 cup, or to taste (Cento, Pastene, Wickles, etc. make this spread)
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
We recommend you get your ingredients ready before you start cooking. Once you're ready, here are the steps to making this delicious recipe

How to Make

  • Step 1: Slice each submarine/hoagie roll, making sure not to cut all the way through, leaving the end intact.

  • Step 2: If preferred, toast bread slightly, being careful not to toast too much as best results are achieved when bread is toasty-soft. (Note that toasting the bread is not essential, but up to your personal taste).

  • Step 3: Evenly place 2 slices of American cheese (optional) on each roll. If toasting the bread, toast while American cheese is layered on the bread as it will melt the cheese slightly.

  • Step 4: Sprinkle half of the amount of the olive oil over the inside of each roll.

  • Step 5: Layer and evenly distribute all the veggies starting with the shredded lettuce onto each submarine roll, making sure to incorporate the feta cheese, hots, pickles, etc. in-between the veggie layers.

  • Step 6: Once all veggies are added in, sprinkle with remaining olive oil and finish with sprinkling the red wine vinegar. Enjoy!

  • NOTE: The amount given are approximate and depending on the size of your submarine rolls, the veggies may be enough to fill 5 - 6 submarine/hoagie rolls. Also note that the amount of the onions, pepperoncini, hots, olive oil, vinegar, and feta, are up to each persons personal taste
