Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • Bread buns (I suggest using Italian panini buns, use as many as you need or can use fresh but firm-textured submarine buns)
  • Soft butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (can use more or less)
  • Salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste
  • Marinara sauce (Kittencal's marinara sauce - posted on this site)
  • 8 mozzarella cheese slices ( OR provolone cheese, or to taste)
  • MEATBALLS
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 3 to 4 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons fresh parsley, minced (or 1 tablespoon dried parsley)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs (more if needed — no dry bread crumbs? soak 2 slices of bread in the 1/4 cup milk)

How to Make

  • Step 1: For the meatballs; in a large bowl mix all ingredients together using clean hands (adding in a small amount more breadcrumbs only if needed to hold the mixture together, at this point you may refrigerate the ground beef until ready to use).

  • Step 2: Shape into about 1-inch meatballs then place on a baking sheet.

  • Step 3: Bake at 350 degrees F for about 25 minutes or until the meatballs are completely cooked through.

  • Step 4: Meanwhile using a serrated knife slice the buns in half lengthwise and remove just a small amount of the bread from the inside to make a “pocket” to hold the meatballs.

  • Step 5: In a small bowl mix the soft butter with garlic powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt, spread over the inside of both bread sides then sprinkle with black pepper to taste.

  • Step 6: Place the buns inside the oven the last 4-5 minutes of the meatball baking time and bake until the bread is lightly toasted.

  • Step 7: In a medium saucepan warm the pasta sauce over medium heat.

  • Step 8: When the meatballs are cooked add them into the sauce and toss to coat and simmer for about 20-30 minutes in the sauce.

  • Step 9: Spoon the sauce and meatballs over a toasted bun half, then top with mozzarella cheese slices.

  • Step 10: Top with the other half of toasted bun.

  • Step 11: Cut in half or as desired.
