Step 1: Using kitchen scissors or a sharp paring knife to cut lengthwise down each vanilla bean, splitting them in half, leaving an inch at the end connected.
Step 2: Put vanilla bean in a glass jar or bottle with a tight fitting lid (mason hars work well) and cover completely with the vodka (or gin though the DD used vodka).
Step 3: Give the bottle a good shake every once in a while and store in a dark, cool place for 2 months or longer.
Step 4: Lasts for years and you can keep topping it off with vodka (or gin) once in a while as your use it, just remember to give it a good shake.
