Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 pounds ground pork
  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 pound ground veal
  • 1 medium russet potato, peeled and coarsely grated
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried savory
  • 1/4 teaspoon rubbed sage
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 cup plus 3 tablespoons beef broth, divided
  • 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • Pastry for double-crust pie (9 inch, deep-dish)

How to Make

  • Step 1: In a large skillet over medium heat cook the pork with beef, veal, potatoes and onion until meat is no longer pink; drain then add in the garlic, seasoned salt, dry herbs and 1/4 cup beef broth, bring to a medium simmer, then reduce heat and cover simmering for about 20 minutes, stirring frequently.

  • Step 2: Remove from the heat; cool to room temperature, then stir in bread crumbs.

  • Step 3: Combine egg and remaining 3 tablespoons beef broth; stir into meat mixture.

  • Step 4: Line a 9-inch pie plate with bottom pastry; trim even with edge. Fill with meat mixture. Roll out remaining pastry to fit top of pie; place over filling. Trim, seal and flute edges. Cut slits in pastry. Cover edges loosely with foil.

  • Step 5: Roll out remaining pastry to fit top of pie; place over filling; trim, seal and flute edges, then cut slits in pastry.

  • Step 6: Cover edges loosely with foil.

  • Step 7: Bake at 400 degree F oven (bottom oven rack) for 15 minutes; remove foil, reduce heat to 375 degrees F bake 30-35 minutes longer or until crust is golden brown.
