Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 tablespoons wheat germ
  • 1 1/2 cup whole-wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup oats (quick-cooking, uncooked)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange peel
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/8 cup sunflower seeds (unsalted, shelled)
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds (shelled, for garnish)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350F. Spray a 1 1/2 qt. round oven-proof casserole dish with nonfat cooking spray; sprinkle lightly with wheat germ.

  • Step 2: In a large bowl combine flours, oatmeal, brown sugar, orange peel, baking powder and baking soda until well blended.

  • Step 3: Add milk and egg white; stir only until ingredients are moistened. Fold in sunflower seeds.

  • Step 4: Pour into prepared dish and bake 50-60 minutes or until pick inserted in center comes out clean. If needed, cover with foil during last 15 minutes of baking to prevent overbrowning.

  • Step 5: Cool in casserole 10 minutes; turn bread out onto wire rack.

  • Step 6: Brush top of loaf with honey and sprinkle with sunflower seeds.
