Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Step 2: Grease and flour a 9 x 13 inch pan.
Step 3: Pour one cup of boiling water over one cup of chopped dates and one tsp. baking soda.
Step 4: Let stand while the following are mixed.
Step 5: Beat 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter and one cup sugar until smooth.
Step 6: Add two eggs, one at a time. Add 1 tsp. vanilla.
Step 7: Mix 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour with one tsp. baking powder and 1/2 tsp. salt and add to butter-sugar mixture. Blend until just combined.
Step 8: Mix in nut and dates including the date water.
Step 9: Pour in pan and bake for 25 minutes
Step 10: Boil the sugar, cream and butter together for 3 minutes. Mix in nuts and coconut. Spread on cake
