  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3 teaspoons yeast
  • 1 cup water (boiling)
  • 1/2 cup water (warm)
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon flavoring
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 8 1/2 to 9 cups all-purpose flour

How to Make

  • Step 1: Combine shortening and boiling water. Stir in milk and lemon flavoring.

  • Step 2: Dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir yeast mixture into shortening mixture.

  • Step 3: When well blended add remaining ingredients.

  • Step 4: Add just enough flour to knead well.

  • Step 5: Knead on floured board for about 5 minutes.

  • Step 6: Let rest 10 minutes.

  • Step 7: Roll out 1/4 inch thick.

  • Step 8: Cut into strips 1" by 6" cover.

  • Step 9: Let rise 1 hour.

  • Step 10: Heat deep fat fryer to 375°F.

  • Step 11: Slip raised side in fat first.

  • Step 12: When browned, turn. This gives flat side time to raise.
