The ingredients are:
  • 8 cups unsweetened grape juice
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup seedless red grapes
  • DUMPLING
  • 2 tablespoons shortening (melted)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (enough to make stiff dough)
  • 1 teaspoon salt

How to Make

  • Step 1: Bring grape juice to a rolling boil with the sugar. Add grapes.

  • TO PREPARE DUMPLINGS

  • Step 2: Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl and mix well with a fork.

  • Step 3: Cut the shortening into the flour mixture with the tines of the fork to resemble coarse meal.

  • Step 4: Stir the water into the dough.

  • Step 5: Use your hands to form the dough into a smooth ball.

  • Step 6: Lightly flour a work surface and pat the dough into a disk.

  • Step 7: Sprinkle the dough with a thin coat of flour. Lightly flour a rolling pin and roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch.

  • Step 8: Cut the dough into sixteen 2-inch squares, using all of the dough.

  • Step 9: Drop dough into rapidly boiling juice

  • Step 10: Cook over high heat about 5 minutes.

  • Step 11: Then simmer for about 10 minutes with cover on before serving.

  • Step 12: May be served with cream or plain.

  • Note: Grape Juice and Sugar must be boiling before adding the dumplings
