Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 pounds figs (18 small fresh figs, slightly overripe, use black Mission figs)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2.2 ounces chopped walnuts (1/2 cup chopped pieces)
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 lemon (juice of)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (3-4 turns)
  • Creme fraiche, for serving

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 400F. Butter a shallow, flameproof baking dish.

  • Step 2: Place figs side by side, stems up, in baking prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup sugar and water.

  • Step 3: Bake figs for 20 minutes, basting with juices occasionally.

  • Step 4: Scatter walnut pieces over figs; sprinkle 1 teaspoon sugar on top.

  • Step 5: Reduce oven temperature to 300F. Bake for 10 minutes longer.

  • Step 6: Transfer figs and walnuts to a serving dish, leaving juices in baking dish.

  • Step 7: Add honey to baking dish. Set over low heat on stovetop and cook, stirring, to blend.

  • Step 8: Spoon the syrup over figs. Sprinkle with lemon juice and pepper. Cover and refrigerate until chilled.

  • Step 9: Serve cold with creme fraiche on side.
