Step 1: In a large bowl whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Step 2: Cube the cold butter and put it in the flour bowl; with a pastry blender cut the butter into small coarse crumbs.
Step 3: In a small bowl mix the egg, vanilla, and cream, mixing well; add to flour mixture just till dough comes together; don't overmix.
Step 4: Put on lightly floured board and pat into a 7" circle; cut with circle cutter about 1" thick; place on ungreased baking sheet.
Step 5: In a small bowl mix the ingredients for the egg wash and brush on top of each shortcake and then bake in a 400 degree oven for 15-18 minutes or till a toothpick put in the center comes out clean.
