Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup crushed ancho chile
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 vanilla bean (split lengthwise)
  • 3 ounces bittersweet chocolate (chopped)
  • 2 ounces liqueur (anise-flavored, Xtabentun or Pernod or your favorite)

How to Make

  • Step 1: In a saucepan combine the first 4 ingredients (milk - cinnamon stick); scrape in the seeds from the vanilla bean and add the pod and then bring mixture to a simmer; remove from heat, cover and let steep for 15 minutes.

  • Step 2: Remove chile, cinnamon stick and vanilla pod; discard. Stir in chocolate and heat over medium-high heat, whisking constantly until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth (5 minutes). Remove from heat and add liqueur.
