  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup raisins (or 1 cup dates, chopped)
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3 cups brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup walnuts

How to Make

  • Step 1: Cook the water, sugar, and raisins or dates together, stirring constantly as it burns. Cook until thick; cool.

  • Step 2: Cream shortening and brown sugar together; add eggs, one at a time. Add vanilla.

  • Step 3: Sift flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon together; add walnuts.

  • Step 4: Add to creamed mixture.

  • Step 5: Pat or roll out on wax paper or towel to 1/2 inch thick.

  • Step 6: Spread date mixture over it, roll up and store in refrigerator.

  • Step 7: Slice and bake as needed.
