Step 1: In a medium bowl, combine the first 8 ingredients. Stir well and set aside.
Step 2: In the large bowl of an electric mixer, beat the butter until creamy. Gradually add the sugar, beating well. Add the egg, beating until blended. Then stir in the rum.
Step 3: Gradually add the flour and spice mixture, beating just until blended after each addition.
Step 4: Cover and chill dough for 45 minutes.
Step 5: Shape the dough into a 13 inch log on a piece of waxed paper. Wrap and freeze for 1 hour or until it is firm.
Step 6: Cut the frozen log into 1/4 inch slices and place on lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes. Remove to wire rack to cool completely. Makes 4 dozen cookies
