Step 1: Melt butter in a 3 quart saucepan over medium heat, saute onion until softened. Meanwhile, chop broccoli.
Step 2: Add remaining soup ingredients and bring to a boil, then simmer 10 minutes.
Step 3: Pour soup into blender and puree. Wipe out saucepan with a paper towel, being careful not to burn your hand.
Step 4: Make white sauce by melting butter in pan, whisk in flour and cook until roux (butter and flour) turns a light, golden color, 5 minutes or so.
Step 5: Add the milk a little at a time, icnreasing the heat to medium-high and whisking continually until sauce thickens.
Step 6: Reduce heat to low, add soup back to pan, then add buttermilk. Cook a couple more minutes than serve.
