The ingredients are:
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 ounces unsweetened chocolate (three 1-ounce baking squares)
  • 1/2 cup hot water

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees, grease and flour pan(s), preferably shiny pans - not dark.

  • Step 2: Cream shortening and sugar, beat in eggs, then sour cream and vanilla.

  • Step 3: Whisk together flour, soda and salt, mix into creamed mixture.

  • Step 4: In microwave, melt chocolate with hot water, then add to creamed mixture.

  • Step 5: Bake 25-30 minutes for 8" cake pans, 30-35 minutes for a 9x13 and 35-40 for a bundt cake. Test for doneness with a toothpick.
