Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 3 pounds Granny Smith apples (6-8 apples, peeled)
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (white)
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 4 tablespoons butter (cold, chopped, or margarine)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons half and half (or use as much as needed to brush on top crust before baking)
  • 2 unbaked pie pastry (9-inch deep dish)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 425F

  • Step 2: Core, and slice apples. Place in large bowl and toss with lemon juice and vanilla.

  • Step 3: In separate mixing bowl, combine sugar, brown sugar, flour, allspice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add dry ingredients to apples and stir well.

  • Step 4: Spoon mixture into bottom unbaked pie shell. Dot with butter. Top with remaining crust, sealing edges.

  • Step 5: Cut vents in top crust, then brush with cream.

  • Step 6: Place the pie onto a baking sheet.

  • Step 7: Bake (450 degrees) for 15 minutes.

  • Step 8: Reduce temperature to 350 degrees and continue baking for 40 minutes or until apples are fork-tender but not mushy.
