Step 1: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Do not grease the baking sheets. Put 1/3 cup sugar in a cereal bowl.
Step 2: In mixer, cream shortening and sugars, then add egg and vanilla, mixing well.
Step 3: Whisk dry ingredients together in a separate bowl, then add to creamed mixture. Fold in walnuts.
Step 4: Roll into 1" balls and roll balls in sugar (in cereal bowl). Bake 10-12 minutes.
