Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup shortening ( butter flavor shortening)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Grease a square pan for 9 biscuits or a rectangular pan for 12.

  • Step 2: Sift dry ingredients. Cut shortening in with pastry cutter or fork. Add buttermilk and mix gently with a fork, being careful not to overmix.

  • Step 3: Sprinkle flour on dough board. Gently knead dough until smooth, no more than 8-10 times.

  • Step 4: For 12 biscuits, roll dough to about 5/8" thick. For 9 biscuits, roll dough to about 1" thick.

  • Step 5: Place biscuits in pan and brush with melted butter. Bake for about 15 minutes or until done. Serve warm with butter and honey or jam.
