Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 tablespoons oil (canola oil)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seed
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seed
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped (small onion)
  • 1 serrano pepper, sliced (small pepper, or jalapeno)
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger root (fresh)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 3 carrots (small carrots, peeled and sliced, on the diagonal
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup green peas (fresh, or frozen, optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala

How to Make

  • Step 1: Heat oil in a skillet. Add cumin seed, mustard seed and onion and saute 2 minutes.

  • Step 2: Stir in Serrano pepper, ginger, turmeric and chili powder.

  • Step 3: Cook until onions start to brown, about 5 minutes.

  • Step 4: Add carrot slices and water and cover. Simmer for 10 minutes, adding a little more water if needed.

  • Step 5: Stir in peas, if using, and garam masala. Cook until peas are heated.
