Step 1: Cream together sugar and shortening. Add eggs.
Step 2: Beat in mashed bananas.
Step 3: Sift dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture.
Step 4: Add buttermilk and vanilla.
Step 5: Stir in chopped nuts.
Step 6: Turn into 2 greased and floured 9 inch layer pans.
Step 7: Sprinkle 1/2 cup coconut on each layer.
Step 8: Bake in 375°F oven 25 to 30 minutes.
Step 9: Combine sugar flour butter and cream in saucepan cook until thickened stirring constantly.
Step 10: Add nuts vanilla and salt. Cool and put between cake layers.
