Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounce) plum tomatoes (broken up, with their juices)
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • Kosher salt and ground pepper

How to Make

  • Step 1: Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, saute for around 3 minutes.

  • Step 2: Add the tomatoes and their juices and the tomato paste. Bring just to a boil.

  • Step 3: Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the basil and sugar. Simmer uncovered to blend the flavors, about 20 minutes (or a little more) stirring often.

  • Step 4: Season to taste with salt and pepper.
