Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • FOR THE MEAT SAUCE
  • Olive oil
  • 2 whole onions, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 4 Italian sausage links (sweet or spicy, casings removed)
  • 1 can (28 ounce) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (14 ounce) diced tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons dried oregano
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • Pepper
  • FOR THE CHEESE SAUCE
  • 2 large eggs, whisked
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 2 pounds ricotta cheese (full fat)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (35%)
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt (or to your desired taste)
  • Freshly ground pepper (to taste)
  • FOR ASSEMBLING LASAGNA
  • 1 box (1 pound) lasagna noodles (Use the ready-to-bake lasagna noodles)
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated (divided)
  • 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, grated

How to Make

  • Step 1: For the meat sauce: heat some olive oil into a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the onions and sauté just until they soften and begin to brown, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the ground beef and sausage meat. Use a wooden spoon to break the meats up into very small pieces and cook until browned and cooked through (15 minutes).

  • Step 2: Add both cans of tomatoes and their juice, beef broth, oregano, bay leaves and salt and pepper. Stir well and cook for about 1 hour. Taste the sauce and add more salt and pepper if you like during cooking time.

  • Step 3: To make the cheese sauce: simply mix together all the ingredients listed for the cheese sauce until very well mixed.

  • Step 4: Preheat your oven to 375°F.

  • Step 5: Grease a lasagna pan (must have high sides).

  • Step 6: To assemble the lasagna: layer the ingredients in the pan in this order: 2 cups of the meat sauce, a layer of noodles, half of the cheese sauce, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, another noodle layer, another meat sauce layer, another noodle layer, the remaining cheese sauce, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, another noodle layer, the remaining meat sauce, the remaining cheese sauce and finally top with remaining 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese.

  • Step 7: Cover the pan VERY tightly with a double-layer of foil. Bake for 1 hour.

  • Step 8: Remove the foil top with 1 1/2 cups (or more) of mozzarella cheese and continue cooking for another 15 minutes.

  • Step 9: Allow to sit for 20 minutes or more before slicing (the longer you let it site the better or the cheese filling will all run out all over the pan).
