Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 pound green string beans, trimmed (cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon oil (vegetable oil)
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons panch phoron (see description)
  • 1/4 medium onion, peeled and sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt, to taste
  • 3 tablespoons slivered almonds, toasted and chopped

How to Make

  • Step 1: Fill large pot with enough water to cover the beans and bring to a boil. Add beans and 1/4 tsp salt; boil 3 minutes. Drain and set aside.

  • Step 2: In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add the panch phoran; stir until it begins to pop, about 30 seconds.

  • Step 3: Add the onion and saute until it begins to brown, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook another 2 minutes. Add the cayenne and turmeric and stir.

  • Step 4: Add drained green beans and lemon juice, stir and cook until beans are heated through, about 2 minutes. Stir in black pepper and salt to taste.

  • Step 5: Put into serving bowl and garnish with toasted almonds.
