Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8th. cup shortening
  • 3 ounces buttermilk (or 3 ounces whole milk, with 1 tsp.lemon juice and let sit for 5 minutes)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

  • Step 2: Mix together all dry ingredients, and sift twice(double sifting is VERY IMPORTANT).

  • Step 3: Cut in shortening until flour looks like crumbly cornmeal or small peas.

  • Step 4: Add buttermilk and mix just until a ball is formed(you might have to add a bit more flour or buttermilk to get it just right).

  • Step 5: Knead for at least 3 minutes.

  • Step 6: On a floured counter top or board,pat dough (don't use a rolling pin) out to 1/2 inch thick.

  • Step 7: Cut four biscuits out with a floured biscuit cutter,or just pat out to a square and cut into four even pieces.

  • Step 8: Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet( I used greased parchment paper for easier clean up)and bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned.
