Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1/2 cup soft butter
  • 2 eggs, large
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup applesauce (sweetened or unsweetened)
  • 1 cup molasses (mild)
  • 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 1/4 cups water (or 7-Up or Sprite)
  • Confectioners sugar

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350F.

  • Step 2: Butter a 13x9 inch baking pan.

  • Step 3: In a bowl combine the flour with next 6 dry ingredients; set aside.

  • Step 4: In a large bowl beat butter on high speed for 30 seconds. Add eggs, beat 2-3 minutes. Add sugar and applesauce, beat 2 minutes more. Beat in molasses until combined.

  • Step 5: Alternately mix in the flour mixture and the water, beating on low speed until just mixed.

  • Step 6: Spread the batter into pan.

  • Step 7: Bake 40 minutes or until a toothpick or cake tester comes out clean.

  • Step 8: Cool 30 minutes then dust with confectioners sugar
