Step 1: Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
Step 2: Add beef and butter and cook until beef begins to curl, stirring frequently.
Step 3: Add flour and stir to combine.
Step 4: Add milk slowly while stirring until well combined.
Step 5: Simmer, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens, about 10 minutes.
Step 6: Add optional seasonings or vegetables as desired.
Step 7: To adjust consistency: add more milk if the sauce is too thick; add a teaspoon of cornstarch combined with 1/4 cup cold water if it's too thin.
Step 8: Serve warm over toast or mashed potatoes.
