Step 1: In a large bowl, combine cereal and peanuts. Set aside. Butter or spray a 9×13? baking dish well.
Step 2: In a large saucepan, combine sugar and corn syrup. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring often. When the mixture comes to a full boil, remove from the heat. Stir in vanilla then peanut butter to melt.
Step 3: Pour mixture over cereal/peanuts and stir to coat very well. Pour into baking dish and spread evenly. Dampen your hands with water if you like then press down in pan.
Step 4: In the microwave melt chocolate with shortening, removing once to stir. When chocolate chips are smooth, glossy and ready to spread, use a fork or spatula to spread the chocolate over the cereal mixture. (I prefer using a fork to make swirl designs). Cool cut into bars or cut into shapes using a cookie cutter.
