Step 1: Melt butter over low heat in a 5 quart pot. Whisk in sugar and cocoa.
Step 2: Turn heat up and add milk. Whisk to keep it from burning.
Step 3: Once it comes to a rolling boil, let it cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly.
Step 4: Remove from heat and let sit until cool. Stir in vanilla.
Step 5: Let it cool completely before icing cake.
