Step 1: Brown salt pork and onions together.
Step 2: Clean and pick over clams, reserving liquor.
Step 3: Chop finely.
Step 4: Cook potatoes, carrots and celery in boiling salted water until almost done.
Step 5: Add clam liquor, salt pork and onions, clams and tomatoes.
Step 6: Season and stir in butter just before serving.
