Step 1: Prepare the topping:
Step 2: Preheat oven to 325°F.
Step 3: In a small saucepan, melt the butter and add brown sugar, vanilla, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
Step 4: Cook only until the sugar dissolves.
Step 5: Put 2 cups of old-fashioned oats into a bowl and pour the hot sugar mixture over.
Step 6: Mix well.
Step 7: Spread onto an buttered Pam sprayed cookie sheet.
Step 8: Bake 10 minutes or until golden brown, stirring once.
Step 9: Hot cereal:
Step 10: In saucepan, combine the 3/4 cup of old-fashioned oats, cracked wheat, currants, cinnamon, salt, and milk.
Step 11: Slowly bring to a boil.
Step 12: Immediately reduce to a simmer and cover.
Step 13: Cook approximately 15 minutes.
Step 14: Stir often so it doesn't burn.
Step 15: Bowl up.
Step 16: Sprinkle 1/2 cup of topping mixture over each serving of hot porridge.
