Step 1: Preheat the broiler.
Step 2: Take 1 slice of sourdough bread (approximately 1 ounce).
Step 3: In a large gratin dish, spread butter on both sides of the bread slice.
Step 4: Toast the bread under the broiler until it turns golden brown.
Step 5: Once toasted, remove the bread from the broiler.
Step 6: Smear 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard evenly on one side of the toasted bread.
Step 7: Layer 2 slices of tomatoes on top of the mustard.
Step 8: Add the shaved onion on top of the tomatoes.
Step 9: Arrange 2 ounces of Black Forest deli ham on top of the onion.
Step 10: Sprinkle 4 ounces of shredded Swiss cheese over the ham, ensuring it covers the entire surface.
Step 11: Place the prepared gratin dish back under the broiler and cook until the cheese is melted and develops light brown spots.
Step 12: Once the cheese has melted and lightly browned, remove the dish from the broiler.
