Step 1: Heat olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.
Step 2: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pan. Sauté until the onion becomes translucent and the garlic is fragrant.
Step 3: Add the ground beef (hamburger) and Italian sausage slices to the pan. Cook until browned, breaking up the meat with a spoon or spatula.
Step 4: Once the meat is browned, add the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste to the pan. Stir to combine.
Step 5: Add the dried basil, dried oregano, dried thyme, sugar, salt, and pepper to the sauce. Mix well to evenly distribute the seasonings.
Step 6: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Step 7: While the sauce simmers, steam the cauliflower florets until they are tender but still slightly firm. You can do this by placing the cauliflower in a steamer basket over boiling water or by microwaving it with a little water in a covered microwave-safe dish.
Step 8: Drain the cooked cauliflower and transfer it to a serving dish.
Step 9: Pour the meat sauce over the cooked cauliflower, making sure to distribute the hamburger and sausage evenly.
Step 10: Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese (if desired) and freshly chopped basil or parsley.
