Step 1: CAKE: In a microwave, melt the chocolate and water on high for 1 1/2-2 minutes or till chocolate is almost melted, stirring after each minute; stir till chocolate if completely melted.
Step 2: Mix flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
Step 3: Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl with electric mixer till light and fluffy; add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Step 4: Stir in chocolate mixture and vanilla.
Step 5: Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition.
Step 6: In another bowl, beat the egg whites till stiff peaks form; gently sir into batter and pour evenly into greased pans.
Step 7: Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or till done; cool for 15 minutes and remove from pans; then frost with Coconut-Pecan Frosting.
Step 8: COCONUT-PECAN FROSTING: Mix the milk, sugar, butter, egg yolks, and vanilla in a large saucepan and cook on medium heat for 12 minutes or till it is thickened and golden brown, stirring constantly.
Step 9: Remove from heat; add the coconut and pecans and mix well.
Step 10: Cool to room temperature and of desired spreading consistency.
