Step 1: Fry the onions in the butter and oil over medium heat in a large pot until they begin to look translucent.
Step 2: Add the potatoes and carrots and fry until onions begin to turn deep golden in color.
Step 3: Pour in the beef broth and cook until vegetables are tender.
Step 4: Meanwhile
Step 5: Fry the bread squares in butter in a heavy skillet.
Step 6: Serve the bread floating on top of the soup.
