Step 1: Pastry:
Step 2: Beat the butter and brown sugar in mixing bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy.
Step 3: With mixer at low speed, beat in the flour and pecans.
Step 4: Press dough into a 10-inch pie plate and refrigerate 10 minutes.
Step 5: Filling:
Step 6: Combine apples, sugar and 1/2 cup water in a large skillet.
Step 7: Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then cover and cook 5 minutes.
Step 8: Dissolve cornstarch in 1/4 cup water in a small bowl;
Step 9: Stir into apple mixture.
Step 10: Bring to a boil, then cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes.
Step 11: Remove from heat.
Step 12: Stir in the butter, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cool.
Step 13: Topping:
Step 14: Combine flour, pecans, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger and mace in a medium bowl.
Step 15: With a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in the butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 16: Set aside.
Step 17: Heat oven to 400 degrees F.
Step 18: Spoon filling into the pastry shell. Sprinkle topping evenly over apples.
Step 19: Bake for 10 minutes.
Step 20: Reduce oven temperature to 375 degrees F. Bake for 30 minutes more or until apples are tender.
Step 21: If topping browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil.
Step 22: Cool on a wire rack.
