Step 1: Mix flour, soda, and salt.
Step 2: Cream butter, and gradually add sugar, beating in until light and fluffy.
Step 3: Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each.
Step 4: Blend in chocolate.
Step 5: Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk, a little at a time, beating after each addition.
Step 6: Add vanilla (and nuts if desired) and mix in.
Step 7: Pour into 2 greased and floured 9"x5" loaf pans.
Step 8: Bake at 350' F. about 60 minutes or till cake tester inserted in centers comes out clean.
Step 9: Cool 10 minutes, then remove from pans and finish cooling on racks.
Step 10: Top with glaze if desired. Garnish with chopped nuts to taste.
