Step 1: In large bowl, beat brown sugar, shortening, buttermilk and eggs until blended
Step 2: Gradually stir in flour, baking soda and salt.
Step 3: Stir in cherries, dates and chopped pecans.
Step 4: Cover and refrigerate 1 hour.
Step 5: Heat oven to 375°F.
Step 6: Grease cookie sheet.
Step 7: Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto cookie sheet.
Step 8: Place a pecan half on each cookie if desired.
Step 9: Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until almost no indentation remains when touched lightly.
Step 10: Immediately remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.
