Step 1: Scald milk in saucepan; remove from heat.
Step 2: Add butter, first amount of sugar and salt.
Step 3: Stir to melt butter and dissolve sugar and salt; cool to lukewarm.
Step 4: Stir second amount of sugar in warm water in small bowl; sprinkle yeast over top; let stand 10 minutes; stir to dissolve yeast.
Step 5: Beat eggs in large bowl; add cardamom; add milk mixture and yeast mixture; stir.
Step 6: Work in enough flour until dough pulls away from sides of bowl.
Step 7: Turn out onto floured surface.
Step 8: Knead 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Step 9: Place in greased bowl, turning once to grease top.
Step 10: Cover with a tea towel.
Step 11: Let stand in oven with light on and door closed about 1 3/4 hours or until doubled in bulk.
Step 12: Punch dough down and divide into 3 equal portions.
Step 13: Place in 3 greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pans.
Step 14: Cover with tea towel.
Step 15: Let stand in oven with light on and door closed for about 45 minutes or until doubled in size.
Step 16: Bake at 350F for 40-45 minutes.
Step 17: Turn out onto racks and cool.
Step 18: When loaves are cool, mix icing sugar and water in small bowl to make a barely pourable glaze.
Step 19: Drizzle over loaves using back and forth motion.
