Step 1: Cream butter and sugar till fluffy; beat in egg, lemon rind, and vanilla.
Step 2: Add the milk alternately with the dry ingredients.
Step 3: Put one-half of the dough in a medium bowl and add a few drops of red coloring till you have the color desired; leave the other part dough color.
Step 4: Roll strip, one of each color, the size of a pencil and about 6" long; put them side by side.
Step 5: Pinch together and twist into a rope and shape into a candy cane.
Step 6: Place 1" apart on ungreased sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.
