Step 1: Heat oven to 350
Step 2: Mix butter, shortening, sugar, egg yolks and vanilla
Step 3: Work in flour and salt until dough holds together
Step 4: Shape by teaspoonfuls into 1-inch balls
Step 5: Beat egg whites slightly,
Step 6: Dip each ball into egg whites then roll in nuts
Step 7: Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet and press thumb deeply into center of each ball
Step 8: Bake 10 minutes or until light brown
Step 9: Immediately remove from baking sheet
Step 10: Fill thumbprints with jam or jelly
