Step 1: Oatmeal ... Add the oats, water, milk, butter, and salt to the crockpot; and, mix to combine. Cover and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours. My larger crockpot took 6 1/2-7 hours. Once the oatmeal is done, add the vanilla; and, stir to combine. Also, if it seems a bit dry, you can add a bit more water.
Step 2: This can be made during the day; to make and pack up for your weekday breakfasts - or, make over night for guests the next morning.
Step 3: Toppings ... Obviously, you can set out anything you like. The fresh fruit of course should be prepared right before serving. Otherwise; everything can be prepped ahead of time - which is great for over night guests. I like to set out a full bar with a variety of toppings; then, let everyone help themselves.
Step 4: Serve and ENJOY! ... For a quick breakfast ... simply reheat a bowl in the microwave for a quick easy to go breakfast; and, you can also keep some of the toppings in small ziploc bags or containers in the pantry too. Simply add your favorite toppings; and, it is breakfast on the go.
Step 5: My Favorites: Blueberries or raspberries, brown sugar, nuts, and a little heavy cream. My best friend - maple syrup, walnuts, and dried cherries; and her kids - peanut butter, chocolate chips and bananas, and nutella and apples. So as you can see ... be creative and have fun with it.
