Step 1: Whisk together the pudding mix and the milk in a large bowl just until it begins to thicken.
Step 2: Immediately whisk in half of the cool whip. This needs to be done quickly to avoid lumps, and I suggest only doing half of the cool whip so that it's manageable to mix in quickly.
Step 3: Fold in the remaining cool whip with a rubber spatula.
Step 4: Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator covered. Add toppings as desired.
