Step 1: Beat butter and brown sugar together until light and flutty.
Step 2: Add egg and vanilla and beat well.
Step 3: Sift flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar together.
Step 4: Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture, beating well after each addition.
Step 5: Blend in nuts.
Step 6: Separate dough into four parts.
Step 7: Roll each part into a cylinder about 1 1/4" thick.
Step 8: Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 2 hours.
Step 9: Preheat oven to 350°F.
Step 10: Remove dough from refrigerator, unwrap, and slice on a slight diagonal.
Step 11: Place about 1" apart on ungreased baking sheets.
Step 12: Bake at for 15 minutes, or until lightly browned on edges.
Step 13: Cool on wire racks.
