Step 1: Combine all ingredients except cinnamon sugar and melted butter in the order recommended by your bread machine manufacturer.
Step 2: Start dough cycle.
Step 3: When dough cycle is finished, remove dough from machine.
Step 4: If making by hand:
Step 5: Heat the milk to 110-115 degrees.
Step 6: Pour on top of the brown sugar and yeast, and let it sit for 5-10min.
Step 7: Add oil, egg and apple.
Step 8: Stir flour, salt and spices together and stir into yeast mixture.
Step 9: Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
Step 10: Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until doubled.
Step 11: Punch down the dough, and roll it out 1/2 inch thick.
Step 12: Preheat oven to 350° F.
Step 13: Divide into 14 pieces and shape into donuts (or pat out and use cutters).
Step 14: Place on a baking sheet and let rise 30 minutes.
Step 15: Bake for 15-20 minutes or until browned. and done.
Step 16: Immediately brush each doughnut with butter and dip in cinnamon sugar.
