Step 1: Place sugar and water in a heavy 3- to 4-quart saucepan.
Step 2: Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
Step 3: Insert 4 cloves in a ring around the top of each apple.
Step 4: Place apples side by side in the pan and baste with the syrup.
Step 5: Cover and reduce heat to low.
Step 6: Simmer, basting occasionally, 15 minutes, or until apples are tender.
Step 7: Let cool in syrup.
Step 8: Serve in individual dishes.
Step 9: Pile whipped cream in the center of each apple.
Step 10: Top with a tablespoon of the syrup.
