Step 1: Separate the ham slices and smoosh them together in as fluffy a mound as possible. Melt a tablespoon of butter on a griddle or cast iron skillet over medium heat and slide the heap of ham onto the butter. Fluff it up occasionally so it warms through-and-through but doesn't turn crusty.
Step 2: Butter one side of each piece of bread or the exterior of the sliced hard roll. Place the bread, butter side down, on the same griddle or in a separate skillet. Lay a slice of cheese atop each slice of bread and cook until the bread is lightly toasted and the cheese has begun to melt.
Step 3: Pile the hot ham onto one of the slices of bread and top it with the other slice. Cover the sandwich with a pot lid or aluminum foil and let it steam under the lid for a minute. Flip it and let it steam another minute. The exterior should be a golden brown and crisp.
Step 4: Remove from skillet and slice in half to serve. Add condiments to taste.
