Step 1: Preheat oven to 375F. Butter or grease baking sheets.
Step 2: Into a bowl, sift flour, baking powder and all of the spices.
Step 3: In a bowl of electric mixer, beat butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
Step 4: Stir in rum (or brandy or milk).
Step 5: Gradually add the flour/spice mixture, stirring until well combined.
Step 6: Form dough into a ball.
Step 7: Sprinkle work surface with flour and knead the dough. Roll dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
Step 8: With a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut dough into rectangles 2 1/2 inces by 1 1/2 inches.
Step 9: Put rectangles onto prepared baking sheets.
Step 10: Press some almond pieces into top of each rectangle and brush with lightly beaten egg white.
Step 11: Bake 12-15 minutes until browned and firm.
Step 12: Cool on wire rack.
