more vitamin d?

Post by ssej1078 » Sun Jan 11, 2015 9:41 pm

Just a random nugget, just read an article I clipped out of the paper in Jersey that states if you feel like you are on the verge of an illness, cold flu or whatever, to take 40,000 units of vitamin d at bedtime, vitamin d, not vitamin c..I know weird right...though I don't know how many pills per unit that ratio is, and I'm not a doctor but wanted to share cause maybe it can help people..

Ok well later

Jess

You must be very, very careful when taking megadoses of any vitamin supplement. My sister went into hypercalcemia because she started taking excessive vitamin d supplemments. Vitamin D helps to metabolize your calcium more efficiently. My sister had a glass of milk every day, ate cheese every day, had an antacid that had calcium in it every day, and did not realize that many of her prescription meds contained calcium. All her blood numbers were in the normal range, and within 3 weeks, she was hypercalcemic. It destroyed her kidneys and she is now on kidney dialysis for the rest of her life, 4 hours per day, 3 days per week.
Please see your doctor before starting on megadoses of vitamin d.

Everyone in the north is Vitamin D deficient in the winter. The sun isn't strong enough or out long enough to give us all we need. I take 5000 units a day just to keep my level at 60... Normal range is 60 to 100. I went off them for 3 months and it went down to 6. I could hardly function. Gotta be careful though taking as much as 40 or 50,000. Talk to the dr.

Although most people take vitamin D supplements without any problems, it’s possible to take too much. This is called vitamin D toxicity. Vitamin D toxicity, where vitamin D can be harmful, usually happens if you take 40,000 IU per day for a couple of months or longer, or take a very large one-time dose.

I am a huge advocate for Vit D. I had 2 stress fractures, both very slow healing, they found out I was low on vitamin D. I was talking calcium daily, but not Vit D. Dr put me on 5000 IU a day and I healed within 3 weeks. HONEST, not lying. I was so much better after just like 5 days it was insane. I believe in it, but as everyone is saying be careful with mega doses. I have my blood tested every 2 mos to make sure I am still ok and that it isn't doing more harm than good. I still take it even after my breaks mended to insure it doesn't happen again, but like I said, have blood tests every 2 mos to check my liver, kidneys and whatever else they are looking at.
